BROADWAY PROJECT: March - Once

If you don't yet know my feelings on this show, you may read about them here
Long story short, I love it.
Having just transfered from it's Off-Broadway home to the Great White Way,
I could not wait to show my support by making them cookies!

It's about a boy who plays guitar...

and a girl who plays piano....

and what happens when they share their love of music.

"You must always say hello to the piano" -Girl

And the cast seemed to enjoy them!

Ripley and Mckayla play Ivanka.

Understudies Sam, Ben & Brandon approve.

Do not miss this beautiful show!!

Gettin' Crafty: Make Your Own COOKIE CUTTERS!

Being a custom cookie company, there are many times when I don't have a cookie cutter for the shape I need. My previous method involved printing out the shape on card stock and cutting out each individual cookie from the dough.

Needless to say, this wasn't working for me. It worked well, but took FOREVER.

So, I did some snooping on the world wide web and came across a variety of ways to
MAKE YOUR OWN COOKIE CUTTERS!

I wanted to make knee-high boots for Venus in Fur, but the only cookie cutter I found that I liked was $13 and wouldn't ship in time for me to make the cookies, so it was time to test this out.

SUPPLIES:
- A print-out of your cutter shape
- Various cylindrical objects to shape the cutter
- 1 Soda Can (You can also use an aluminum tray)

1. Cut the top and bottom off of the soda can and cut the body of the soda can horizontally into 1" wide strips.

2. Line up the strip with the image you are using and bend the metal to the shape.

3. Paperclip the pieces of the cutter to keep it together.

4. Use them!

Works like a charm. You make have to dismantle them to clean up, but you can us them over and over again, so don't throw them out! You never know when you'll need that shape again!

RUN AND SEE: Once

It's not rare that a show makes me cry. From sadness, or joy, or a just plain moving performance, if it's good, I cry. But only once in a while does a show move me to debilitating sobs once the curtain goes down. John Logan's Red on Broadway in 2010 and Sarah Ruhl's Eurydice at Second Stage in 2007 are two culprits. And now Once has joined the ranks.

I don't even know how to put into words how this show made me feel. I cried from the first note of "Falling Slowly" (the Academy Award winning song from the movie), straight through to the end. If you are familiar with the movie this show is based on, you may understand why. It is a beautiful, heart-breaking story with stunningly moving music. When I heard that they were making it into a musical, I was very worried that they would "Broadway-ify" it. Not that there's anything wrong with a good show tune, but the movie is just not like that. It's very folky and raw and real. Not much of a big Broadway show. But when I saw it Off-Broadway this fall at New York Theatre Workshop, I was beyond relieved, overjoyed really, at the outcome. The show captures the feel of the movie brilliantly. The direction is smart and funny and creative and beautiful. The entire cast is insanely talented, and its basically a big party up on stage. And that's just the pre-show concert! (Where you can also hop up on stage to purchase a beverage regionally appropriate to the setting of the play.) The show is just perfect, and I can't wait to see it again and again now that it has transfered to Broadway.

RUN AND SEE Once, now in previews and opening March 18th at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre on Broadway.

You can listen to the incredible cast recording (released March 13th) here.
